Rivers have been used for centuries to channel people and goods. Along with them came ideas, cultures and connections that shaped the cities they crossed.

The River Clyde is woven into Glasgow’s recent history. The industries that once lined its banks declined from the 1960s onwards, leaving scars that remained visible for decades. Today, the city has reinvented itself.

Photography has a particular advantage when looking at such change. A photograph captures a fraction of a second, while history unfolds linearly, often too slowly to be perceived within a single lifetime. Yet the traces of different periods remain side by side.
